BLOOD TYPE - BLOOD TYPES - BLOOD TYPING

Blood type facts and information about Blood types is a relatively new science. In 1909, an Austrian scientist named Karl Landsteiner classified Blood according to those Blood type differences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his achievement. To the naked eye, every person's Blood looks the same. Under a microscope, the scientist saw distinct differences. This laid the groundwork for stem cell banks.

Landsteiner identified two Blood types. If the red Blood cell had only "Type A" molecules on it, that Blood was Blood Type A. If the red Blood cell had only the different "Type B" molecules on it, that Blood was called Blood Type B. If the red Blood cell had a mixture of both molecules, that Blood sample was identified as Blood type AB. If the red Blood cell had neither molecule attached, that Blood was referred to al Blood Type O. There are rare Blood types and very rare Blood types.

If one Blood type is improperly mixed with another Blood type in a human, the Blood cells may begin to "clump" together in Blood vessels, causing a potentially fatal Blood transfusion reaction. Blood types must be carefully matched before Blood transfusion and Stem cell donation.

Our Blood type is inherited. As of this writing, practice states that an individual with type A Blood could donate Blood to a person with type A Blood or type AB Blood. Stem cell storage discounting. A person with Blood type B could donate Blood to a person with Blood type B or Blood type AB. An AB type Blood donor could only donate Blood to a person with Blood type AB.

A person with type A Blood can receive Blood from a person with Blood type A. The person with Blood type B can receive Blood from a person with Blood type B. A person with Blood type AB Blood can receive Blood from anyone. An individual with Blood type O could only receive Blood from a person with type O. Blood type charts are provided HERE.

In the past, Blood type O negative was considered to be universally acceptable as donor Blood for Blood transfusion. The commonly accepted thought was that Blood type O negative Blood could be given to anyone, regardless of their Blood type, without causing a adverse transfusion reaction. This theory is no longer universally accepted. See an article on the subject HERE.
